Common questions
Do I need to know accounting to use this?
No. You add your income and expenses, we sort them into the categories HMRC needs, and you see your quarter's position in plain English before anything is sent.
Is a quarterly update a tax bill?
No. It's a running summary of income and expenses for that quarter. You still pay tax the same way as before, once a year, and nothing is due when you submit an update.
What if I only have one rental property?
Simple MTD works whether you have one property or several, and for self-employment income too. See our guide for one-property landlords.
When do I need to start using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
From 6 April 2026 if your qualifying income is over £50,000, and from 6 April 2027 if it's over £30,000. Use our free tool to check whether and when this applies to you.
